Abstract:

You are to think of a person whom you think individuals in your discipline, or area of interest, should know about. The information about this person can be simply informational, motivational, or inspirational (and maybe all three). It can not sell anything, be simply entertaining, or be of such little importance that no one would be interested in watching this video.

This is a TEAM project. You must have at least two other class members working with you and one of them must be a graduate student enrolled in R685. Everyone is to gain experience in all aspects of video production. This means that there will be constant "trading-off" of functions within your group. For this project you will have to check-out a video camera (or use your own if you have one). Editing will be done in a variety of ways depending upon available resources. The bottom-line is that you must convey a message in this linear medium.

The purpose of the project is to help you gain experience scipting, directing, shooting, and editing video footage with live subjects. As a result, live talent must play a central role in this video product.

Deliverables:

• An edited VHS videotape with the program material conforming to the following specifications:
• Time limit adhered to (between 3 and 5 minutes, not including opening 33 seconds)
• A script and storyboard(describing visual and audio elements of the program)
• An opening consisting of 30 seconds of ColorBars, followed by 3 seconds of Black, followed by the program.
• An opening title with music.
• Examples of the following shots: close-up, medium shot, long shot, establishing shot, two shot, over the shoulder shot.
• A portion of the program must contain a scene in which each member of the team performs as talent. It is not necessary that this performance be a solo, i.e. more than one person may be on camera at any one time to satisfy this criteria.
• The program must contain at least one picture which includes camera movement (a pan, zoom, or tilt)
• A credits screen.
The following items are will be used to establish how well your group accomplished each item. Each of the following criteria will range from -2 to +2 toward your final grade for this project.
• Message presented clearly, consistent with identified audience
• Shot Quality (clarity, head room, angle, etc . . .)
• Music (how well does music maintain continuity, match with content)
• Editing choices, timliness of edits.
• Use of narration over and cutaways under (could be in same shot)
• Variety of shots
• Consistency between audio and visual mediums
• Appropriate shot sequencing (ES, LS, MS, CU, MS, CU eg. )
• Overall quality of video (this item is worth from -4 to +4)
• A project report that lists the components and production paths used in the creation of this multimedia product.
