Standard 2: Development

“Development is the process of translating the design specifications into physical form” (Seels & Richey, 1994, p.35). Throughout my coursework, I have learned the skills necessary to develop effective instructional materials using a variety of media including print, audiovisual, computer-based, and integrated technologies. By utilizing these processes, I have demonstrated the specifications for the Development Standard.

My experience with Standard 2.1, Print Technologies, occurred during IT 544 Desktop Publishing. During this course, I learned how to use many types of software including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to develop instructional materials. With the use of these tools, I created a children’s book entitled “Look Outside With Me” [IT 544 Look Outside With Me pdf file size 2.4 MB]. In this book, I created graphics by drawing images on construction paper and placing items on top of the papers. I then took digital photographs of these images and imported them into Adobe Photoshop to modify the image quality. The text for this book was simply created using a text editor. When each page of the book was completed, I compiled these files into one central file so that reproduction of the print version could be fulfilled easily. This children’s book provides a foundation for further instructional materials to be created using the content and theme of the story.

My experience with Standard 2.2, Audiovisual Technologies, occurred during IT 614 Technology in Education. During this course, I created an instructional video with a group of individuals [IT 614 Video wmv file size 17.5 MB]. We wanted to create a simple video explaining how to play a particular video game. We began the process of creating the video by planning how we wanted to shoot the video as well as scripting what would be said during the video. After the planning portion of the project was completed, we shot our video using a digital video camera. Once the video was recorded, we edited the video using digital editing software. The finished video provides the viewer with step-by-step instructions on how to play the game as well as an opportunity to see the actual game being played. This video could allow for learner interactivity by simply allowing the viewer to actually play the video game after watching this video.

My experience with Standard 2.3, Computer-Based Technologies, additionally occurred during IT 614 Technology in Education. During this course I created individualized instructional materials that were computer based [ IT 614 USA State by State html file size 16 KB]. This computer-based instruction was assembled using Microsoft PowerPoint. In this interactive PowerPoint, students are given the opportunity to learn and review information about all fifty states in the United States of America. When a student opens this PowerPoint, they are presented with a short video about the song “America the Beautiful”, after viewing this video the students are allowed to navigate through various areas in the country via interactive maps. When the students are viewing a portion of the interactive map, they simply click on the state’s name that they are interested in and they are transported to a page with information about that given state. After reading this information, the students return to the map they were previously viewing to choose another state to learn about. This computer-based instruction allows each student to learn the same information but in the order they prefer.

My experience with Standard 2.4, Integrated Technologies, occurring during IT 621 Authoring and Scripting for Multimedia. During this course, I utilized Macromedia and Adobe software to create hypermedia that contains many forms of media. One project I completed in this course was a digital teaching portfolio [IT 621 Portfolio flash file size 2.3 MB]. This portfolio was intended to enhance my resume for obtaining a teaching position. This portfolio contains both learner control and high levels of interactivity by allowing the viewer to navigate to different sections of the portfolio at their discretion. The viewer also has the option to mute the audio portions of the portfolio thus creating more learner control. This portfolio also includes a video in which I introduce myself to the viewer as well as voice over audio throughout the portfolio. Additionally, this portfolio contains a graphic environment that I created for the background. I created this graphic by placing common items one would see on a teacher’s desk on a flat surface. I then took a digital photograph of these items and imported this image into Adobe Photoshop to modify the image's quality. Integrating all of these elements has created a unique teaching portfolio that will allow potential administrators to learn more about me as a professional.

All of these experiences have given me the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to complete the Development Standard 2. I have successfully demonstrated each of the four sub domains of this Standard throughout my coursework.
