Standard 4: Management

“Management involves controlling Instructional Technology through planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising” (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 49).  Throughout my coursework, I have demonstrated skills in the two sub domains of Project Management and Resource Management.

My experience with Standard 4.1, Project Management, occurred during several courses including IT 656 Multimedia Production.  In this course, I worked with a group of individuals to create a website that contained fun educational games for children in grades 3-5 (file name IT 656 Design Document).  This class utilized a small group management system called SCRUM.  Within the SCRUM system, an individual is appointed as the SCRUM leader.  I was appointed as the SCRUM leader and it was my responsibility to make sure that each individual in the group completed their work.  If someone was not completing the tasks they were assigned, it was my job to find out why they were having troubles and help motivate them to complete their tasks.  Additionally, as the SCRUM leader, I was responsible for documentation.  This included keeping a log of tasks the group has and has not completed, noting assignments for each team member, and maintaining a design document for the project.  This position allowed me to plan, monitor, and control the development of this project.

My experience with Standard 4.2, Resource Management, occurred during IT 605 Network Architecture.  In this course, I created an interactive document with information about creating a computer lab for an elementary school (file name IT 605 Building a Computer Lab).  For this project, I began by researching the different elements that are necessary to create a computer lab including different networking topologies to find the best one for the lab I was creating.  After planning the basic elements of the lab, I began researching the different aspects of a computer lab such as computers, cables, scanners, printers, and networking switches.  Once I decided what specific devices I was going to implement in the computer lab I began to create the documentation for this project.  This documentation included the costs of each device included in the computer lab with a justification for each item.  Additionally, I included a proposed computer lab layout displaying where each item in the lab would be placed within the facility.  Through this experience, I have learned the importance of planning, monitoring, and controlling resource support systems and services.

Overall, my experiences of being the SCRUM leader and designing a computer lab have allowed me to develop different management skills.  I have effectively learned how to manage a project in order for it to be successfully completed as well as learned how to manage a resource support system such as a computer lab.  These two experiences demonstrate my knowledge and skills of Management Standard 4.
