Objectives: Designed for children to practice
their spelling, word recognition skills, auditory comprehension, and to
practice their strategies for solving word puzzles.
Brief Description: There are three games
to choose from to start off. Spellbinder is where the child spells
the word by sight or sound, the word search game gives the child a list
of words on the right and they have to find the word hidden in the
the third game they can choose from is the criss cross puzzle. There
is an empty puzzle and the child has to fit the words from the list on
the right into the puzzle where they belong. The child receives 100
points for every word they get right and if they get all the words right
they receive 500 bonus points at the end of each game. Finally when
the child reaches the target score they can then enter the Shady Glenn
Spelling Bee. Where upon the child is given words out loud and they
need to spell them correctly. If the child wins the spelling bee
then the game starts over on the next level.
Entry Capabilities Required: The child
must be at least a remedial speller and have knowlege of the key pad.

children extra practice in spelling, recognition, listening, and strategy

recognition, and strategy skills. The greatest aspect of this program
is the child will have so much fun they won't even realize they are actually

Each game has its unique qualities and is quite animated. It is very
likely that a child's interest in the game will not dwindle and they will

The only aspect that might be confusing is that the child needs to reach
the target score before entering the spelling bee. Aside from this
the directions are explicit.
Technical quality (durable, attractive):
(5) The quality of the program is great, and the graphics are eye catching.
Game: Winning dependent on player actions (rather
than chance): (5) Getting to the spelling
bee is dependent on winning because, without enough points they will never
get to spelling bee. In order to get points they have to spell, arrange,
and find words correctly.
Simulation: Validity of game model (realistic,
accurate depiction):(3.5) The game itself
in realistic in what it asks the children to do. However, the animation
is not realistic at all. The contestents in the spelling bee are
robots that act like humans.

When the child still mispells a word on the third try the word is spelled
correctly for them.
The only area that could be improved is the word list. I think there
should be a broader list including more names.
