Number of Players: 1
Special Equipment/Facilities Needed:
Subject Area: S writing and being able
to define important points.
Objectives: to find the impotant ideas
of who, where, what, when, why with sample bits and pieces of imformation.
Brief Description: There are various statements
that indicate the content of a news article. The objective is to find more
information, using a "telephone" or flipping through the various statements
provided, and find the major points in 2-3 words.
Entry Capabilities Required:
Rating: (1-5)
Relevance to objectives: 3- the idea behind
the game was to find the main points so that they can be used in a simulated
news article. The students will need to be able to find the importance
in few words and answer the 5 "w"s of reporting.
Provides practice of relevant skills:
2- the players find the importnat ideas, but the computer has the story
written out for them when they find what is asked for.
Likely to arouse/maintain interest: 2-
the process is a little tedious and boring.
Likely to be comprehended clearly: 4-
once the idea of the game is figured out, it's easy to play and know what
you are doing.
Technical quality (durable, attractive):
3- the graphics are nice, but there aren't many of them. The game is mostly
played with the picture of a box full of sentences.
Game: Winning dependent on player actions (rather
than chance): 3 -it is difficult to
answer the questions without havinbg a sense of the material, but it can
be done.
Simulation: Validity of game model (realistic,
accurate depiction): 3- there
is an editor that congradulates or scorns the work with a gruff voice.
There is more to editing and writing than just finding the facts though.
Evidence of effectiveness (e.g. field-test results):
2
Clear directions for play: 2- the download
that I used didn't have a clear set of instructions, I learned as I went.
Effectiveness of debriefing:1-the
game didn't tell the reasons that things were wrong, instead it just told
what questions were correct, and what one's were wrong.
Strong Points:
The ideas that finding the main points of a story can be done in three
words or less, and the collection of the 5 "w"s in reporting.
Weak Points:
The students don't get to actually write the article, instead it is written
by the computer and the article doesn't contain exactly what the student
may have observed.
