SUNY Potsdam is located just west of the Adirondack National Park and east of the St. Lawrence River. The Racquette River, with headwaters in the Adirondacks, flows by the campus. The river offers recreational opportunities for students and faculty. Canoes, kayaks, cross country skis, and snow shoes are available through student activities.
Potsdam is a college town. The four college and universities in the area cooperate through the Associated Colleges of St. Lawrence County. In addition to the advantages of expanded course offerings to students, the colleges attract many international artists and scholars.
Ottawa, the capital of Canada, with its many cultural and recreational opportunities, including the largest winter festival in North America, is just a short drive north. Montreal, the French cultural center of Canada, is less than two hours by car.
