IT 655 - Video Design and Production

Overview: This course provides students with an introduction to digitial video design and production techniques

In this class we will use HD digital video cameras. In order to complete this class you must have access to (via a previous purchase or new purchase) your own HD digital video camera. You will need a camera with a microophone jack and the ability to record in HD. Along with the camera, you will need both a minijack microphone and a tripod (full-sized). Some cameras, microphones, and tripods are avaialble for signout from the OLT program inventory in Dunn 395 (limited supply). It is always preferable for you to use your own your own equipment, as this will help to ensure knowledge transfer in the future. For editing, we will be using Final Cut Pro on the iMacs in Dunn 210. You may choose to edit on any number of alterantive systems, including, but not limiited to: iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, Lightworks, Adobe Premiere, or Kdenlive. You are similarly encouraged to edit on your own systems, although if you use a laptop the use of a second monitor is encouraged.
Instructional Video Project - 50% of the overall grade.
Variable Topic Project - 50% of the overall grade.
Attendance: Daily attendance is required of all students.
Digital Storage: Each students is required to have a 16 GB or larger usb external drive, along with appropriate cloud storage..

In Class: Shoot and edit a 2 minute video with any equipment. The video should have limited to no planning, any topic at all, ungraded, don't overthink it. Edit the video any way you can, and then upload to YouTube (You can do basic edits in YouTube (Video) (pdf)). You may need to create a YouTube account if you do not already have one. Once video is completed and uploaded, send a lnik to the video to firstname.lastname@example.org. The video should be available to those with the link to it, not open to the general public. The point of this exercise is to work thorugh the full pre-production, production, post-production, publication process quickly, and to overcome technical obstacles, not to produce high art. We will review and critique (nicely!) the videos.
